Summary of the Deep Water

In this story, the writer “Willian Douglas” talks about his fear of water and how he overcame it. The narrator had a great fear of water because of an incident that occurred to him in past. When he was three or four years old, he went to a California beach with his father then at that time a big wave knocked him down which made the author frightened.

So, When the Narrator reached the age of Ten or Eleven years old then he decided to learn to swim and for that, he chose the YMCA pool because of a safer option. It is shallow and about 2 to 3 feet deep but at its end, it is 9 feet deep.

He starts learning swimming but one day, when he is all alone an incident happens to him. A 18 year old boy tossed him at the deepest end of the pool but his strategy of survival did not work. He was getting unconscious when tried his third attempt at strategy for survival. This made him downward at that time about near to death experience which felt like he was going in his mother’s lap to sleep. Later when he regained consciousness he found himself lying beside the edge of the pool vomiting. This fear of the incident haunted Douglas for several years due to which he never enjoyed fishing and swimming at that time.

Finally, he has decided to overcome his fear and learn to swim under the proper guidance of an Instructor who taught him to swim in bits and pieces. In October they started their training and it was finished in April.

Douglas finally learned to swim but he had doubts in his mind whether he had overcome the fear of water or not so he decided to go to different takes to swim and started tiny visits to several places to improve their skills.

On the First Day when he went into the water then he faced some old memories. The next day when he went to the warm lake he conquered the fear completely. Now he understands that death is peaceful but the fear of death is horrible.
