Summary of The Enemy
The story revolves around the Second World War in which Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and the situation is felt in such a condition that both countries are ready to kill the enemy of other countries found on their land.
The Chapter is all about a Japanese surgeon named Sadao who visits America for studies and returns to Japan after completion. He marries a Japanese girl named Hana to whom he visits in America. During the time of war, all the doctors were compulsory to serve for nation except Dr. Sadao because he was professional in their work and General Takima had poor health condition so he did not trust anyone.
One night near the seashore he found an American soldier in dying condition in front of the house. This situation is difficult for Sadao but unwillingly he and her wife Hana decide to give him medical treatment and take him to the house. After knowing the secret about giving medical hospitality to the enemy all the servants decided to quit the job to keep themselves out of danger.
After some days the Soldier regains consciousness and now they no longer be the patient so Dr. Sadao decides to get rid from this situation by killing the soldier during sleep. So one day he clearly informed General Takima about the situation and in return General promised to send an assassin to kill the soldier. Every night Sadao thinks about the death of a soldier but finds him alive the next morning. So in the end as a real man, he takes the situation into his own hand and decides to rescue the soldier. He makes the plan to send the soldier near the island where he find the fishing boat which helps in running away from Japan. He also gives him a torch light for communication (if the light flickers one time this means he is safe and if light flickers two times this means he needs help). But the next day when the sun sets and he does not get any signal from the enemy this gives the indication that he rescued the soldier. But in the end, this left the question in the mind of Sadao “Why does he not kill his enemy?”.
